Fundamentally different from conventional upconversion mechanisms, we have fabricated self-powered, microscale optoelectronic upconversion devices based on semiconductor heterostructures. This novel upconversion device can work under incoherent low-power illumination, with emission intensity linearly dependent on excitation. Additional features, such as broadband absorption, wide spectral tunability and fast dynamics, have also been discovered in this design.
